Over the weekend, I went up to Chicago to visit two of my bestest friends in the whole entire world. It was a short trip and there was a lot of catching up to do, so I didn't get much time to take photos. Because I still can't shop for clothes, I had to carefully plan what to take to my short stay in the city. This casual nautical dress was perfect for walking around on that warm-ish Fall day. I threw in a lightweight scarf and cardi to the mix just in case it got colder at nighttime.

We went to tons of restaurants, old and new to us. One of my favorites is a nouveau Mexican restaurant, Estrella Negra. It's a hip cafe with beautiful decor and delicious food with TONS of vegetarian options. We shared all our food, a bottle of Moscato, beer, and lovely conversation. Because of my chatty self, the night waned without any other attempt on my part to immortalize the first (short) leg of my adventure. But it sure was a blast

When going on trips, do you plan your daily outfits?

  4. You had me at the adorable hair and start shaped tortilla chips.

Unfortunately I DO plan outfits ahead when I travel and bring nothing with me but the outfits I planned. It never fails, though, that I rip something/spill on something/forget something at home and am left having to rush out to the nearest store.

  7. You came to Chicago and you didn't visit me :( Darn, well there is always next time! I use to travel 100% for work and so I had a list of everything I wanted to take with me. It was a beautiful weekend and this outfit was just perfect!

  8. I definitely try to bring set out planned outfits on trips...but half the time I end up mixing it up when I get there because I feel like wearing something else, haha! It's fun to plan what you're going to wear anyway :)

  9. I love me some nautical C: I do plan entire outfits for trips! Once I went to a wedding out of town with a friend, and his dad couldn't/wouldn't set a return day and I was like "WHAT??? but you dont understand, the clothes!"

  13. I do! I just went to Portland this weekend, and I had to plan everything out so that I took just the right amount of clothing, haha. And work out shoes that go with all outfits so I only have to wear the one pair, etc.

  16. This is just the perfect outfit for a day out with your friends, and I love the topknot :) I definitely plan my daily outfits whenever I go on trips. I'd have all my outfits lined up, and I wind up bringing some spare pieces just in case I change my mind at the last minute. I am so not a light packer lol.

  17. You look great. The food looks delicious and is making me hungry!

I plan every single piece before my trip. I pack with the list to make sure that I don't over pack. I had to start doing that because I used to bring my entire closet no matter how long the trip. Now, I can pack a carry-on bag for a 2 week trip to Europe! That's how meticulous I am. Or, that's how CRAZY I am. Depending on who's reporting this.

  23. Great photos :) The food looks yummy! mmm it depends on the trip for me, if I go on a long trip, I'll bring a bunch of my favorite things, and make sure I can wear things together, but if it's a short trip I'll make specific outfits. Logical I think, no?

  24. These photos are awesome. The food looks amazing. I usually plan out outfits for trips, but I never end up sticking to them :/

  30. I almost forgot to look at your outfits because I was too busy drooling over the Mexican food (yumtastic!) You look comfy and chic- I do plan my outfits before I pack so I'm less stressed when on the road!

    ReplyDelete
  31. ALWAYS! i try to pack as light as possible and stick to the basics for spunk: comfy boots, scarves, etc. anything small that packs tight into a suit case works for me.
ps. star tortilla chips? there is a heaven. :)

  32. My strategy when I go on trips is to pick out a couple "event" outfits and then build on the pieces in those outfits to create a really good mix-and-match...I like to be able to choose each day what to wear, but don't want to pack a lot...so I pack things that can easily be mixed around or layered! It's actually a fun challenge and one of my favourite parts of traveling.

  36. I'm glad you had fun. I like the looks of that burrito. I've never had one made with a spinach wrap before. Mmm. Again, you've created such a fun and pretty outfit. I like the contrast between the lace scarf and the studs on your purse.

Do you feel like your 6-month challenge is getting easier?

Yes, I do plan my daily outfits while traveling. I usually allow myself one or two extra items, but really try to avoid packing unnecessary things.

  37. That food looks DElish! And I love this outfit, especially your top knot bun :)

  38. Those look like yummy chips, haha.

I normally plan my outfits when i travel, only because it makes things easier, instead of me digging around in my suitcase trying to find a combination of clothing :)

Love your dress :) very cute. and thank you for the lovely comment on my blog.

  39. I totally plan outfits for my trips! I lay them all out on my bed, complete with accessories, before packing. Then sometimes I stick to those :)

  48. I LOVE your nautical striped dress! I also plan my daily outfits, not so much for class all the time though but I only have class twice a week lol but other than that I normally will have a good idea of what Im going to wear the next day or else Im a wreck in the morning!

  49. oh my goodness those shoes! why was I not surprised that they were thrifted? I swear, you can find gold in those stores :D I really love the dress that you picked! I'm just learning about planning outfits when on a trip because I wasn't very fashion savy on trips before, but now I think about what would be good for walking around, or if the weather is warm, and being stylish at the same time! The next trip I'm going to I swear it's going to be all about pieces that I can mix and match together.

That scarf by the way is the best icing on the cake! I love the way it's a bit sparkly but not really, like a subtle outfit statement :D. Now I'm thinking of finding something like that it's a really good accessory!

  50. how fun are those star chips??!!? i have a blue striped dress that i wear all the time..it's casual but can be dressed up, too. i sort of plan, but i more just make sure i have bottoms and tops, and a dress...then wing it when i get there :)

  53. Helloooo from Edinburgh, Laura!!! My internets is trying to cooperate today -- so one of my first stops had to be your blog -- I've missed you and it!
As per usual you look tres chic, and I love how you are being budget conscious because it makes me try harder too! The only thing I feel bad about when looking at these photos is that Chicago looks sooo much warmer than Scotland. That doesn't bode well for our winter, me thinks.
Love the Mexican food pics too because tex mex is tricky to find over on this side of the pond. We tried some taco seasoning from a package last night and the spices were more Indian than Tex-Mex. So I will live vicariously through your food pics.
Hope you are having a wonderful start to fall!
