dress: thrifted and redone by moi :: necklace, skinny belt: Forever 21:: heels: Payless

This dress was a thrift find that sat in my to-mend pile for a really long time. In the store, the buttons were coming off, the length was very unflattering, and the hem of the skirt was extremely frayed. Still, I thought the gold embellishments were adorable against the blue fabric and the stitching (done in white) was quite lovely. In my mind, it looked like a shirt dress in the making

In wearing this re-done dress, I chose to accentuate the gold buttons by wearing a scant amount of jewelry. I was feeling very 40s pin-up housewife with my red lips, so putting on the red heels and belt just seemed to follow naturally.

I put quite a lot of work on this dress (2 hours with the attention span of a spoiled kindergartener is a long time), even though it doesn't look like it. I had to sew a lot of buttons on again, lopped off about 1.5 feet of the skirt, sewed the whole front shut (because the top part kept on flapping open when I moved), and altered the shape of the skirt to an A-line. The sleeves need a little bit of work, since they're a bit too roomy for my tastes, but for Fall, they're cozy enough. Because of the sweet, little details on this dress, all the work was worth it.

How far would you go in considering buying something that obviously needs a lot of work?

  9. It looks great! That 6 month challenge is rough, so many props. I'm so bad I could never do it.

I've bought things purely because I liked the print, even though they needed like 4 days worth of work. Always so rewarding!!

  13. I love the pops of red! and... if i find something amazing at a thrift store, I would totally rework it if I'm in love with the garment.. not so much for normal retail though. And also, I love collaborations between designer and high street too but i don't think i'm down for lining up in front of h&m at 7am... :p especially on a saturday!

  20. Great job! I don't even know how to thread our sewing machine, so I wouldn't ever buy anything that needs more than a button sewn on (hand sewing I can handle!)

  28. I cannot even iron clothing, lol! So, I never buy anything that doesn't already fit well or that needs to be fixed up, even a little bit. It would never get done!

  29. Love the look! :3

I don't usually buy clothes from regular stores with the intention of altering them! (I don' t really have the sewing skills that you do!) But if there's something cheap in a thrift store, sometimes I take a stab at attempting a little change!

  31. If I really loved the item, I would buy it no matter how much work it involved.

Hehe and I am also guilty of buying things that are slightly damaged because I can't bear for them to sit there in the shop... ;)

You are looking so uber cute, the shoes are so stunning.

  32. Seriously, why can't I find sexy red heels like these at Payless? I love the pops of red in this outfit, lady! And did I mention you own red lipstick! Looking good, Ms. Laura! :)

  33. oooh! i think the dress looks great on you! you're lucky that you are able to alter things to your body, even if it does take a lot of time. i wish i had that skill!

  35. Skirt dresses are the best! They are probably one of my favorite thrift finds. I never buy anything that needs modifying because I cannot sew worth my life! I'd love to learn once I get out of college, though.

  36. I love what you did with the dress! It looks awesome and I agree very much like a 40's pinup girl :)

  40. WOW Laura! I had no idea you were also a sewing queen! You did a beautiful job and I can definitely see the hard work. For me, I am super lucky as my Mom can sew and she has taken in a size 10 skirt down 5 sizes. How do I decide? Well it has to be a good price and also great quality. If it something I can shop around for a substitute in my size, then I'll forego it. F21 has a lot of great finds, you just have to dig...DIG...DIG... But you'll find pieces like my skirt today for $20, wool AND bonus...lined :)

  41. I can't sew so if it can't be worn as is I usually shy away from the item (which is unfortunate because this dress looks amazing on you thanks to the alterations!) I love the pops of red and I just read about your 5 month challenge- what an inspiration!

  42. Wow, I am impressed. I have extremely limited sewing skills. Sometimes I buy things thinking I'll get them altered somehow, but that rarely happens! I have been meaning to take a few dresses to a seamstress. Maybe I'll get on that this week.

You look really lovely, Laura! This shade of blue looks very nice on you. And the red accents are perfect :)

  47. You. Are. A. Genius. I know really little about altering stuff and my tiny sewing machine is broken so I haven't done anything aside from the pants I turned into a skirt before. I really love that you kept the buttons, vintage buttons are awesome specially when they look as pretty as those! I also love the little red accents, really small but in red they pop and just decorate your top so well!

Maybe if I do get my little sewing machine working, I would consider cutting long dresses or skirts making them the right size. Or maybe read up on altering stuff, I guess that would help :D All the dresses you've altered are inspiring me! :D :D

  48. Glad you decided to rescue this dress, it came out so well!
