Playing it Safe

I wore my owl earrings to make me look smart. Because owls are smart, right?

The dress code for my new job is "business casual" which the HR lady explained to us is "just basically looking neat." We can wear anything from logo tees to sweat pants as long as they fit well and cover us up.  I would've gone ahead and dressed up in actual business casual attire, dress trousers and a polo, but for my first day, I decided to keep with the crowd and gauge my surroundings a bit. So this is me playing it safe.

Surprisingly, I was one of the few (if not, the only one) who did not show up in baggy jeans and a hoodie. Ok, to be fair, most of the people who work there are a (lot) bit older than me, but those who were close to my age looked like they just rolled out of bed

Because of work, I haven't been able to visit blogs or twitter too often. I miss you, guys! So save the awesome conversations for after 5pm or the weekend, 'kay?

How do you dress up for a first day at work?

  1. I love how vague that HR advice is - "just look neat." Nice. And you look great - love the stripe/leopard combo and the owl earrings are such a nice touch.

  2. I get nervous over everything on my first day of work. lol. Especially what to wear, because it's going to make or break a good first impression. For smart casual, I'll prob go in jeans/black cotton dress and cardigan. How was your first day at work?

  4. This is a great first day of work outfit if your office is as casual as it sounds. Love the pattern mixing!

  5. My work is the same kind of business casual (not REAL business casual) More like casual casual, lol. For instance from where I am sitting, I can see someone in a track suit, someone in a t-shirt and someone in a hoodie.

  6. cute outfit, i dress in slacks, pumps and a button down shirt. ;-)

wait... depends.. first day of work depends where I'm working... lol

  7. Wow, that's a pretty liberal dress code! Ours is casual, but back when it actually was business casual, people would come into the office in tracksuits and matching Juicy sweatsuits on casual Friday. That's a bit too casual for me.

It's definitely a good plan to play it safe at first, and you did a great job here of that while still letting your own style show through.

  8. This is a great outfit for a first day of work!! You look very pulled together and still show that you have a sense of style and personality.

For my first day of work, I kind of overdressed since I didn't know what to expect. Now I dress much more casually :)

  10. I think it's awesome you can dress casually for work, gives you a lot of freedom to dress up or dress down. Love the outfit, I really like your sweater!

  15. I like the leopard/stripe combo going on in this outfit. Your office dress code sounds a lot like mine! A lot of ppl here (of all ages) wear lulu lemon/spandex exercise gear to work-which I find appalling!!!!!!

It's been a long tone since my first day of work so I think the best answer is I dress more conservatively than usual.

  16. Love it!! Love the stripes+leopard!
I don't understand how people think jeans and a hoodie are work appropriate. Maybe if you work in a warehouse, but not in an office.

  17. I love the pattern mixing, they go surprisingly well together. Looking cute on the job is where it's at, ESPECIALLY when everyone else is lazy.

  18. At my last job we were forced into what I like to call "black and white hell" because you could only wear black or white... so that doesn't leave one with many options... lol

I think you did a great job! Can't believe some people show up in sweatpants, crazyness!

  19. I love your leopard print scarf! I used to work somewhere where we had to dress in black in white, got quite tedious as there's only so many combinations, it's as if they thought colour couldn't look smart! Nowadays I usually wear some smart trousers with a top or a dress with tights. Hope the job is going well! x

  20. Cuuuuuuute! I love the scarf. I have an irrational (but deep and abiding) fear of animal prints. I purchased an animal print head band the other day as a gateway print, though... now I just need to wear it. =P

  22. Hey Laura! Girl, thank God we don't have to dress up too much. Just on occasion. I usually wear a lot of slacks and sometimes skirts. I think your outfit is really cute. Love the cuffed jeans and cardigan. I've been seeing a lot of OWLs lately! It's definitely the thing. You're a SMARTIE already, so the owls are just an addition. I think I've told you before but I love your hair up like that. And those glasses are super cute on you. Have fun! I hate to look at people that look as if they just rolled out of bed. Everyone should pull themselves together some kind of way. Have a great time at work and we all understand. Sometimes I can't get to posts until late. ((HUG))

  29. I think you defo got the smart/casual balance right, I had this dilemma a week ago for a work training day and was totally stumped for what to wear, for me there's no inbetween, it's either suit or jeans & tee, I can't do both at the same time!

  31. I know when theyre vague you have more leeway but i like looking professional. girls always wear like a sundress and a blazer for business casual but i think it should be pants or business capris, and some top with a cardigan.

  32. Biz casual at my office is actually slacks, no jeans. So this is lax..it's casual attire. I like it, the stripes look awesome with that leopard scarf!

My office is very casual and for a while I kept things low key - but I like getting dressed up so much more!

  43. i think you got the perfect amount of casual chic going on! the leopard scarf is definitely the oomph-worthy detail!! usually on the interview day, i'll scope out what others are wearing and dress appropriately for the first day...then eventually see what i can get away with!

  44. Ahh I love this look it's so adorable and the combo in patterns in genius. Dressing up for the first day of work for me has always felt like a wolf in sheep's clothing. I always test out the waters and air on the conservative side then slowly let my personal style shine...now after being at my job for 3 years I'm basically a sloppy mess, but my first few months I was basically a fraud based on how I dressed.

  45. Oh man - I am so jealous that you get to wear jeans to work. I work in a law office and it's also business casual but they are so strict! Loving the dress code here. Oh la la - do I spot a leopard scarf! Beautiful. Never thought it would pair well with a stripe top but it seems to work here. Hope you had a great first day of work!

  46. You look great. I think this outfit is really cute for work, especially as a nice casual outfit. Your scarf is amazing and I love it!

  47. Cute look, I love that cardigan. :) I usually dress up in a fitting pair of jeans, or a pencil skirt, and a cute top. Basics, but they work. Always. :) Have a nice week, sweetie! xoxo

  48. I think you did a fabulous job for a first day on a job that has people showing up in jeans and hoodies. I would probably have worn something similar.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Lol. Business casual does not mean that to me. But it's different everywhere. I swear on the east coast it means no tie and no jacket... or something else.

I AM SO ENVIOUS of your cheetah print scarf. You got a tutorial or anything?

  50. How did your first day of work go, Laura? Hopefully well considering your neat & put together first day outfit!

I generally just try to look neat (be it either for the first day or any day really), but today I felt like such a slob. I was cold, so I threw on 2 cardigans regardless of how bad everything really looked together ;P
