everyday is a party

I don't live in a big city, and I don't have a lot of money. I am young and smart, but I'm currently underemployed, with in a less-than-fulfilling job that drains almost all the happiness out of me everyday. I could sit down and be mopey about it, blaming the economy and faulting a society that undervalues the importance of critical reading and appreciation of literary works. But that would be a waste of time. Plus, the wrinkles that would form from my brow-furrowing would totally ruin my face.

So I try to make everyday a party as much as I can. Usually my daily parties involve mini treats in the form of baked snacks or reading a comic book. Other days, they take the form of painting my nails or spending an afternoon at the park or library, immersed in a steamy critical analysis of a favorite author's work. Sometimes, party=impromptu dinner dates with my darling husband and I get to indulge in a fudge sundae and quesadillas. When I party everyday, my life becomes a bit more magical.

I hope you all have a magical weekend!

  3. You're so right in having and doing mini happy things - with not being employed myself it can get dull doing the same thing constantly and not feeling like you're doing anything. So even if its just cross stitching for an hour or two or wandering to the library its important to remember they are still magical times!

    PS Thanks for the congrats!!

  4. We so need to get together and complain about the crappy state of academic jobs, etc. one of these days. And seeing as how I am now officially unemployed, I think I need to take you advice about making everyday a little more magical.

  5. Love it! I am trying so hard to live by that philosophy too, I too have a ho-hum kind of job and could totally let it get me down, but instead I make each day fun as much as I can!

I love your pretty lace top!

  6. Laura, I'm so sorry your job continues to be so non-gratifying. Good for you for creating your own kind of magic! I'm so inspired by your words that I will make it a point to create magic too! I'm currently battling the mother of all colds so God knows I need all kinds of magic to get through today! Hang in there, lady! You can do this! :)

  11. I love your outfit, I've never actually shopped at a Rue 21 and I'm beginning to ask myself why not? This top is really cute and I love the color of the skirt, I also really need to rediscover wearing brown shoes. I love your outlook on life and I agree with you, it's the small things that make a day great, I'm almost always uplifted after some frozen yogurt. Library days too, gahhh, I love going to the library.

  17. I have felt the way you are feeling about your job one too many times in my life. The little things in life matter most no matter what. My biggest daily Love is having that first cup of coffee in the morning. I must say that this outfit is Absolutely Gorgeous! The color combination is perfect and it has a very feminine, almost Victorian feel with the lace. You look Amazing!!

  22. New York Times says we're in the worst job market in a year again. I def could have told them that without all the fancy analysis-- no one is hiring again. I'm underemployed, too, but I live in New York where I can get life staples like $2 dumplings and Trader Joe's.

I really love this top! You look like you walked out of Anthropologie. Or someone's grandmother's awesome antique store.

  23. I love your philosophy- I've been there and sometimes a hot bubble bath, great meal (and lots of chocolate) are the solution! You look so pretty- that vintage-esque top and great green skirt!

  24. Love how you've worn the lace top with the olive midi skirt! It looks so good together! Anyway... I love how you're optimistic! I guess, a little optimism doesn't hurt as well! Plus, you feel a lot better at the same time... It's the little things in life for sure.... Your evenings sound like bliss! x

  26. I love this outfit, the lace top is flowy and the sleeves are so much fun. Great shoes too, I'm on the hunt for a similar pair.

This post hit home for me, I'm in a similar boat with an unfilling job, making all our time outside of work awesome helps get through the work days I think. Now hand me one of those quesadillas!
