Emma Wallace Album Party and Giveaway!

_30_0208-1
Today is a super exciting day for one of my favorite singers. Emma Wallace is releasing her newest album entitled The Stuff of Fairy Tales. I've only recently discovered Emma's music, but I love listening to her songs while I'm crafting or when I'm feeling in a funk. She has such a beautiful voice and her songs are whimsical and always make me feel a lot happier.  If you don't believe me, clickity click on the widget to hear a sample while you read on and learn more about Emma. She's a sweetheart, and I promise you'll fall in love with her instantly!

1. Your brand spanking new album The Stuff of Fairy Tales is inspired by... Fairy tales! Tell us a little bit about why you chose to write and sing about them.

I grew up devouring fairy tales!  I especially loved my copies of the Green Fairy Tale Book and the Orange Fairy Tale Book!  Unlike a lot of fairy tale purists, I love retellings and reinterpretations (thank you, Disney!) especially happy ones.  This was a fun way to add my own twist.  Plus I find it much, much easier to create when I have an 'assignment' like "write a song inspired by a fairy tale!"

2. Do you have a favorite song or fairytale?

Oh Laura, there is NO WAY I can choose just one song!  So I'll go with my favorite fairy tale - probably The Snow Queen.  Or East of the Sun, West of the Moon.  Or Beauty and the Beast.

3. I love the style of your music. You call it "modern ragtime," but I also think there's a lot of whimsy in it. Tell us a little bit about your style and the artists and songs that inspire your work.

Thank you so much!  I am really inspired by the Tin Pan Alley songwriters like Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Irving Berlin.  They all have a light-hearted, whimsical approach, both lyrically and musically.  I absolutely ADORE Sting's songwriting - especially his lyrics and I totally rip off Harry Connick, jr's piano style as much as I am able to!

4. I am always so curious about how artists spend their days. Walk us through a typical day of a talented songbird.

You are so nice!  Well, I have a 2-year-old so I tend to get up earlier than I'd prefer (alas!) but once I'm up, I'm one of those check-email-the-second-I'm-up people!  Then I try to spend a little time meditating or getting myself focused and excited for the day.  After a long and delicious breakfast (I'm a sweets addict so breakfast is the best meal for people who like to eat sweets disguised as regular food.  Pancakes? Nutella? Pumpkin bread? Yes!) during which I check Instagram and Twitter, I usually go out for a walk!  I also use the late morning to catch up on any vocal recording that needs to be done because things tend to be much quieter around the house and neighborhood in the morning.  I lie down with my baby while he naps (favorite time of the day!).  That's when I do emails, often write lyrics and catch up on my reading.  After a nice post-nap lunch (my husband cooks!) and a post-lunch dessert (and bakes!), I'll go meet up with friends or go to a book store or even Disney!  We live in Orlando so Disney passes have us going to the parks pretty frequently.  Once Baby is in bed, that's when I do all the things I couldn't do from my phone - I figure out, arrange and record piano parts, upload files, write blog posts, and edit songs.  I also Skype-chat with my music mentor (Dan Garcia - who also gives me mixing help and masters my songs) often and talk to my business adviser (coughcough my mom coughcough) to plan the things I need to do next!  Around 1:30/2 am, I usually close up my laptop and head for bed!  Sigh.  A good day.

5. What are your other creative outlets apart from writing and singing?

I have gotten hooked on Instagram though I was always the non-photographer in my family of photographers.  And I get pretty creative when it comes to reading my baby story time - from voices to really thinking about the character development and motivation of each duck or rabbit.

6. What's your drink of choice?

Tea!  I love tea so much.  It's my favorite.  And hot cocoa.  But mostly tea.

7. Since this is primarily a personal style blog, tell us about your own personal style.

I think I'm perfectly divided in threes.  One-third of me is completely boho with about five gypsy skirts and three maxi dresses and real-life Birkenstocks.   The next third loves the 60s mod look (my favorite Halloween costume ever?  A girl from the original Star Trek series!).  Aaaand, I also would be absolutely happy wearing a uniform of Amelia Earhart-type clothes every day.

8. Currently reading?

I just got Starry River of the Sky by Grace Lin for my birthday!  Her retellings of Chinese folk tales are so beautiful and inspirational.

9. Currently watching?

Well, since I do 97% of my work at night, that cuts out my t.v. time.  But I love (LOVE) Avatar: the Last Airbender and can't wait for the next season of Korra!  And I've had my Cooking Channel marathons too!

10. Is there a specific message or idea you would like to express through your music?

What I'd love for people to feel when they listen to my music is happiness.  You know those days where everything just seems to go right for you?  You catch every green light and get complimented multiple times on your outfit?  I'd love my music to be the soundtrack for those days!  The more days everyone has like that, the nicer and happier everyone will be and the better the world will be.  I take happiness pretty seriously!

  14. Laura, wonderful Q & A! My sister was the one who told me about Emma's music. I remember the song was "A Reason to Stay Up All Night." It has such a folksy tune that was instantly catchy. I love how the button turned out! Thank you for posting it on your sidebar, my friend! :)
