Let's Talk!

If you’ve poked around the blog in the last couple of days you may have noticed that the commenting system is a bit different. After mulling about it for over a year, I finally took a big leap and switched over to using Disqus! In the last few months, I’ve noticed a decreased number of comments in the blog even though my viewing stats have increased. I’m not sure what the reason for this may be, but to be honest, I’m glad I’m getting fewer comments.

You see, as a courtesy, when someone takes the time to read what I’ve written and leaves a comment, I usually visit their blog, read, and try to comment back. That’s how I have been able to find many of the blogs I now regularly read and make connections with so many unique and like-minded people from all over the world. But in these times when everyone has a blog and seems way too concerned about stats and comments, I’m not so sure that I feel obligated to return a comment for a copy/pasted “Love your blog, visit mine” comment left on my posts.

I suppose now I’m much more interested in conversing, even if it’s just a little “thank you” back. I really love being part of the blogging community, and I think moving in this direction will help me make more meaningful relationships with other bloggers and readers out there.  I would, honestly, have lesser comments from people who are genuinely interested and give honest feedback than tons of generalized, impersonal responses. I’m hoping that’ll happen! Fingers crossed!
You guyz, it's 2014! I wish you and yours the Happiest of New Years! Hope you celebrated lots and hard! It's the best way to see off the old and ring in the new!

  1. Happy New Year!!! I hope it will be full of yummy bliss :) I agree with you doll, numbers have become to mean less and less to me. I reply to everyone on my blog because I genuinely want to, but sometimes I'm just bombarded with the typical 'follow me' comments and they say nothing at all to do with what I just post, it gets a little boring. So, I've chosen to start ignoring those. I reply on their blogs as well, but for the 'copy/paste' like ones, I just simply can't, it wouldn't be fair to the people that take the time to visit and really respond on my blog or other places. Just keep blogging great stuff doll & all will be great!! Have a wonderful 2014 with love, happiness and adventures too xx

  2. Happy new year, lovely! I love your point about commenting. Over the years we've been getting less comments, but they've been more substantial and I love that. My number one favorite thing about blogging is the community it creates. So here's to a great 2014 with more blog conversing!

(PS: this is cath, i'm just too lazy to update my Disque info)

  3. You're learning what I learned -- a few good friends commenting (and conversing) is better than dozens of strangers whose viewership is shallow and fleeting. I rejoice at hearing from my friends on my blog; I don't bother to reciprocate drive-by commenters who write only to draw me to their site. Like you, I used to feel obligated to return comments, but now I only do that with people I know and like. Life's too short to waste time and effort. Happy New Year!

  4. I love the skirt and blazer with that t-shirt! I could never pair things as well as you do. That's the best part about blogging-interacting with people and making friends! I'm so glad we've met through blogging! xo
Happy New Year lovely! Wishing you and B. all the best in 2014!

  5. I'm with you. I like the conversations and I usually track down the email address if I can for anyone that comments on my blog. Anyway, Happy New Year!

  6. I never respond to those types of comments - I figure they're not really interested in having a dialogue, just upping their stats. Also, I totally love your shirt - it's awesome!

  7. You look adorable as always, Laura!
Big yay for your disqus comment box! I miss it still but I want to see where my recent choice (Google+ ) bring me to. It seems I get less comments for now since Google+ kinds pushes people to create an account.
I totally understand your sentiment as it is exactly the same I feel about those empty-worse-than-nothing comments. :)

Oh, and happy new year to you and your family! xoxo

  8. Such an adorable outfit :) I love Disqus, actually, because I do feel like it helps promote real conversations - you get emailed responses to conversations and you can reply from your inbox, which helps conversations keep going. I'm glad to see it here, too! I usually don't respond to generic comments, either, and Disqus helps me delete random "link-dropping" bland comments, as well. Happy new year to you and B!

  9. I haven't tried Disqus but enjoyed commentluv and might switch back to it. Missed stopping by here, by the way. Been so busy. But I see you are still posting unique and cool outfits.

  10. zomg stormtrooper shirt!! umm did you know star wars is on the instagram now?

i tried disqus but the few people i have as regular readers had problems commenting with it. the standard blogger comment thinger seems adequate for low traffic blogs

  11. Haha thief. I'm obviously a fan of Disqus. For me it really helps to be emailed comments because I don't tend to spend a lot of time browsing my own blog. You can tell by all the grammatical and spelling errors that I don't bother to fix.

  12. I tried Disqus once before and for some reason lost all my comments, I've been debating returning to it - mainly as you mentioned for the conversation feel that it offers. Anything has to be better then the google+ comment format, not really liking that too much tbh.

Anyways, all the best in 2014!

  13. I love this Star Wars-meets-peppermint outfit! And your hair is so luxurious--I'm a bit jealous, haha.

When I get those spammy copy'n'pasted promo comments, I delete them, and often visit the person's blog to tell them in no uncertain terms that I don't appreciate being used like that. I should probably just brush it off, though.

  14. i've been thinking about using discus. i realized that the way my commenting system is now, a few folks who don't have blogging platforms can't comment. how do you like it so far? and i'm the same way too - i love creating meaningful relationships online. happy new year! hope this year has lots of good adventures and experiences for you! ps - great outfit!

  15. disqus has some great features, i remember...but i'm too chicken to switch over because i'm afraid of messing things up badly, lol! i'm just happy that i can respond to comments individually. love that second picture...the lighting is perfect! happy new year, Laura!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I've thought about switching too, but I'm still mulling it over. I like that you can reply right on the comment form and they get a notice about it over email if they're signed up. You'll have to let us know how you like it after you've tested it out!

But anyway, I love your t-shirt paired with the fun striped skirt. That skirt looks awesome on you!

Happy new year too! I hope it's a great one!

  17. I like Disqus. It's only ever had one or two glitches for me and they were sorted really quickly.

That's a very cute outfit to bring in the New Year with! I like the dark candy cane combo. Makes me think of things being darkly sweet and deliciously twisted (in a non-threatening way.)

So as far as bringing in the New Year - I'm just odd. I decided, to spend the evening "working out". Kung Fu, Qi Gong, Yoga, strength training....You name it, I did it. I figured, if New Years Eve/Day are supposed to be about setting the tone for the coming year, I might as well dedicate myself towards feeling better instead of tearing myself down. Aren't you totes jealz of my wickedly weird ways? :D I could barely move the next day but it was weirdly satisfying.

  19. Happy New Year, Cath! The blogging community is awesome, and I'm with you-- the more substantial the comments, the better! :)

  20. Yay! And I love your term "drive-by commenters!" because that's what they really are! You're so right about life being too short to waste ;) Happy New Year to you too!

    ReplyDelete
  21. You're so sweet, Tracy! Thank you! And I am super glad we met too! I LOVE LOVE LOVE reading your blog and exploring new products I would never even think to look at! Thanks and Happy New Year!

  22. Happy New Year, Sarah! I am so happy that we found each other in the blogosphere and are now writing letters :) hope 2014 is super awesome for you!

  23. Thanks, Courtney! Ben was going to toss it because I shrunk it in the wash, but uhm, I "convinced" him to give it to me instead ;)

  24. Thanks, Lena! I really am loving Disqus so far. Hope that Google+ works out for you! i didn't even know they were an option for commenting! Happy New Year to you and yours!

  25. Thanks, Larie. I am loving Disqus too! I feel like I'm able to actually converse with readers and build an actual relationship! I hope you and S have a wonderful 2014!

  26. I've heard good things about commentluv, but honestly never checked it out! I am loving that Disqus seems to be much more interactive than what Blogger currently offers. Glad to see you here again! Gotta stop by your blog too!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Star Wars is ERRRRYWHEERE! :) I didn't know they were on IG though! That's a shame that your regulars were having trouble with commenting with it. :( I think it's great, and I honestly don't know why I didn't switch sooner!

  28. Looking funky babe! Hey totally with you here. The sincere comments are what really makes my day! Beats having all the generic cut and pasted stuffs. Have a beautiful and blessed 2014 too!

  29. I am SHAMELESS. ;) Blogger has the email function as well as the ability to respond to comments, but I think Disqus is better ;) And, talk about grammatical and spelling mistakes! I am atrocious at editing blog posts!

    ReplyDelete
  30. When I first installed Disqus on the blog a year or so back, I thought I made a mistake and thought I lost my comments. But turns out, I just wasn't patient to wait for the comments to load/sync. I accidentally left my Disqus account set to automatically sync all my comments since then, so reinstalling it was a breeze! :) Hope that you have a Happy 2014!

  31. I never thought of it at Starwars + Peppermint! How clever! I like it :) And thanks for your kind words about my hair! I'm actually surprised that it looks so shiny after I bleached it and put it through so much dyeing!

  32. I really like it a lot. I had it for a short time a year or so back but don't really remember why I switched back to Blogger, and now I can't imagine not having Disqus! :) Hope you have a good year ahead too, Jane! <3

  33. Thanks, Becks! :) and a happy new year to you and yours as well! I was really afraid of messing up, which I did, admittedly (it was messed up on mobile view) But I tinkered around with my settings and it's all good now :) Hope you and yours have a happy new year!

  34. I do like that feature a lot! I had Disqus before for a few weeks and liked it then, and I honestly don't remember why I switched back... Something to do with my impatience, most likely ;) Happy New Year to you!

  35. Dark candy cane! I LOVE IT. How come I didn't think of that? I am so happy that you spent the evening working out! I am seriously catching up today since I've forgone doing anything healthy for the past couple days. :) I think you're totally doing it right by starting the year off with healthy habits! haha!

  36. Oh that's good to know - thanks!

  37. I switched to Disqus last year and love it, and yes, although my comments are fewer I prefer it that way with genuine readers than hundreds of "follow me" linkings. Happy New Year Laura! All the best to you in 2014! :-) x/Madison

  38. I have considered using Disqus too but haven't made the jump yet!

I know what you mean about the obligation factor. It's tough but I try a lot since you never know who you may meet!

    Happy 2014!

  42. I switched to Disqus earlier this year and I've really enjoyed it. The email notifications are really handy, and the spam filters are great (if not a little too good). The only downside that I see is that if I ever want to switch back or to another system, my comments might get deleted. I love that stormtrooper tee btw, and I love how it was "gifted" to you after a while... ;)

  43. Thanks, Brittney! I think I lost my comments too from when I switched back a long time ago, but honestly, my memory is so crappy that I don't really mind ;)

  44. I totally get where you are coming from. Pretty much I am too lazy to bother with a switch to Disqus, but know that the benefits of communicating with others is so much better. I absolutely hate those "great blog would you like to follow each other" comments! It's about quality over quantity with me anyday! Oh, and this outfit rocks! Love the skirt and that awesome t-shirt!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thank you, Heather! I wonder if those people who do spam comments know that they're spamming... ;)

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm a little late, but... Happy new year! Please let me know how you like Disqus (cos I've been totally contemplating changing over to it...)!
    Um, ps, I LOVE the t-shirt. :D
